SHINING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST IN A SEASON OF REST
BREATH OF MY BELOVED

Summer is a time we often associate with rest, vacations, longer days, and a break from the usual routines, even our spiritual routines. But it’s also a unique opportunity to live out our faith in fresh, creative ways and serve others in meaningful ways when hearts are more open and time is more flexible.
We may pause, but the needs of the world around us don’t. And more importantly, the call to serve like Jesus never takes a vacation. In Galatians 5:13, Paul reminds us to serve one another humbly in love. That “command” isn’t seasonal. Whether it’s January or July, the Christian life is one of sacrificial love and joyful service.
Jesus served people in all seasons - whether on a boat, at a wedding, or during a quiet meal. He never missed a chance to love someone practically. This summer, follow His example and find joy in giving yourself to others.
Some ideas - you don’t need a plane ticket or a pulpit to serve. Some of the most impactful service starts at home:
- Babysit for a couple/single parent who needs a break.
- Offer to mow an elderly neighbor’s lawn or run some errands for them.
- Invite someone lonely over for lunch/dinner.
These simple acts create space for connection, and connection opens hearts to Christ. You never know how a small act of kindness can lead someone closer to Christ.
Serving can, however, drain us if we’re not rooted in God, and if you’re busier during this summer time due to managing kids, work, or travel. You’re reminded to take quiet time, rest, and renewal alongside acts of service.
Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray and rest (Luke 5:16). Follow His example. Make space to be filled up by God so you can pour out well. You can try:
- Morning devotional time outside.
- Listening to worship music on walks.
- Reading a Christian book during vacation.
- Keeping a summer prayer journal.
Summer is not just for rest, but for revival of your spirit, your community, and your calling. Do what you can, where you are, with the love you have. And trust that God will use it in ways far beyond what you can see.
“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” -Matthew 5:16
